opening scripture

Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Guard my life, for I am faithful to you; save your servant who trusts in you. You are my God; have mercy on me, Lord, for I call to you all day long. Bring joy to your servant, Lord, for I put my trust in you. You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you. Hear my prayer, Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me.

Psalm 86:1-7

song #1 - over all i know

Verse 1

You tell mountains they must fall and they fall

You tell oceans to be still and they’re calm

You tell sickness it must leave and it’s gone

In my weakness God I know You are strong

You are the One above it all

I stand in awe - You’re the God over all I know

No higher Name - no greater throne

You stand alone You’re the God over all I know

Verse 2

You tell broken things be healed and they’re whole

You tell fear it has no place it must go

You tell death it has no chance it won’t win

And if You are for me, God what could come against

I believe it I have seen it

My God is over all

song #2 - who you say i am

Verse 1

Who am I that the highest King

Would welcome me

I was lost but He brought me in

Oh His love for me

Oh His love for me

Chorus 1

Who the Son sets free

Oh is free indeed

I'm a child of God

Yes I am

Verse 2

Free at last

He has ransomed me

His grace runs deep

While I was a slave to sin

Jesus died for me

Yes He died for me

Chorus 2

In my Father's house

There's a place for me

I'm a child of God

Yes I am

I am chosen not forsaken

I am who You say I am

You are for me not against me

I am who You say I am

song #3 - graves into gardens

Verse 1

I searched the world but it couldn't fill me

Man's empty praise and treasures that fade

Are never enough

Then You came along and put me back together

And every desire is now satisfied

Here in Your love

Oh, there's nothing better than You

There's nothing better than You

Lord, there's nothing

Nothing is better than You

Verse 2

I'm not afraid to show You my weakness

My failures and flaws, Lord, You've seen them all

And You still call me friend

'Cause the God of the mountain is the God of the valley

There's not a place Your mercy and grace

Won't find me again

Bridge 1

You turn mourning to dancing

You give beauty for ashes

You turn shame into glory

You're the only one who can

Bridge 2

You turn graves into gardens

You turn bones into armies

You turn seas into highways

You're the only one who can

Sermon: wrestling with god

That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sonsand crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.  When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared." The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.
